Service to the School Community through Band by Hannah - November 2019 Scholarship Essay
I feel that I have impacted my school's student body by being involved in the band program. As a member of the band leadership team for two years, I have seen the impact I have had on my peers. Especially with the freshman in my section, an effort is made to make these individuals feel welcome. My job is to pursue excellence with them relentlessly and to encourage themselves to strive forth with a drive to give their best.
Due to the nature of participating in a marching band, we find ourselves to be frequently exhausted and ready to quarrel with one another. I wanted to be able to encourage my peers, so I chose to put aside my grievances. I forced myself to help others as much as I could, as a response to how tired I was feeling. At the end of my last two seasons, I felt accomplished and was told by many who are younger than me that I made participating in the band a lot more fun than it would have been if I had not shown them that effort.
I feel that this most definitely impacts my fellow student body. Here is why: those people who proved to themselves, through perseverance, what they can attain in our high school setting, and beyond. That's important that they know that. They won't have me to push them forever, but I think I have helped them realize that they are more capable than they realize. With that realization, they can help themselves to tackle more obstacles that high school and life will throw their way, and possess optimism and a sense of humor in doing so.
