Comfort Zone and Risk Taking by Hannah - March 2019 Scholarship Essay
If I were showing the incoming freshmen our school, my main advice is to push yourself out of your comfort zone. I’m a senior and there are so many things I wish I did more of.
For Instance, I wish I pushed myself to be more outgoing and run for the student body office, I had tried three times during jr high and never won, so I think that really made my confidence low to the point that I didn’t want to try again, but that is something I now look back on and wish I did differently. I also wish I tried tennis sooner than I did, I enjoyed Tennis my junior year but once again I wasn’t confident enough to try out my sophomore year, tennis taught me teamwork and dedication, so I am happy that I learned that from playing my junior year, I just feel that I would’ve needed that skill for my sophomore year as well. Lastly, one of the biggest events I regret is not having as much school spirit. I always thought it was ridiculous to partake in spirit week by dressing up or doing the lunch activities and even going to the spirit assemblies. Though, one of my closest friends convinced me to participate in this last spirit week we had, and I don’t regret it at all. It was fun, exciting, moving, exhilarating and not to mention very competitive, to be able to join in on the spirit week. I regret being the ‘grinch of spirit week’. I had a ball doing it my last year of high school.
My confidence got low and because of that I really missed out on some fun opportunities that I could’ve been a part of. I loved every part of high school, but I believe it would’ve been a lot better if I got myself out of that shy, closed off bubble.
I hope that the incoming freshmen will take every opportunity that high school will offer, because in the end, you’ll regret it if you don’t take risks.
