From Adversity to Advocacy by Haley - November 2023 Scholarship Essay
My choice to pursue a career in criminal justice is driven by a combination of personal experiences and a strong desire to contribute positively to society. I have witnessed firsthand the profound impact of crime on individuals and communities, growing up in a family plagued by criminal activity. This exposure has reinforced my belief in the importance of dedicated professionals within the criminal justice system, ensuring that justice prevails and people can live without constant fear.
My personal history, particularly having both biological parents incarcerated, which resulted in my placement in foster care from a young age, has had a significant influence on my career path. This experience has provided me with a unique perspective on the criminal justice system, as I have seen the challenges, struggles, and injustices that can affect families who become entangled in it. This upbringing has fueled my determination to work within the field, with the aim of preventing others from experiencing similar circumstances and providing support and understanding to those who do.
My childhood was characterized by instability, frequent moves between foster homes, and the uncertainty of not having a stable home. Despite these challenges, I was fortunate to have foster parents who cared deeply for my well-being and provided me with a stable and loving environment. Their kindness and support have had a lasting impact on my life, inspiring me to make a difference in the lives of others.
I am drawn to the criminal justice field because I firmly believe in the potential for positive change, not only for crime victims but also for individuals who have made mistakes and find themselves within the system and having Judge Judy on the TV constantly. My personal experiences have taught me the significance of understanding the underlying factors that drive people to criminal behavior and how their brains work in that process and the process of rehabilitation and support can play a crucial role in breaking the cycle of crime.
Moreover, my motivation stems from a profound sense of empathy and a strong desire to assist those who have been marginalized or are facing challenges, much like my own biological parents. I aim to be a voice for those who are often overlooked, ensuring that they are treated with fairness and dignity within the criminal justice system.
In my pursuit of a career in criminal justice, I am committed to ongoing learning and self-improvement. I recognize that the field is complex and ever-evolving, and I am dedicated to acquiring the knowledge and skills necessary for success. Whether it involves studying the law, understanding criminology, or developing conflict resolution skills, I am determined to become a capable and compassionate professional who can contribute to a more just and secure society. I believe I will be a great asset because of my personal insight to the criminal side and law enforcement.
