Breaking Barriers Through Science: My Journey to Pursue Health Equity by Hafizah - May 2023 Scholarship Essay

Reflecting on my journey, I can't help but feel excited as I recall the moment that ignited my passion for science. It all started back in elementary school when I embarked on a science fair project that involved building a paper mache volcano. When I poured baking soda and vinegar into it, the eruption that followed was nothing short of spectacular - a red-colored explosion shot quickly into the sky, and then a stream of fizzy, bubbling liquid poured down the volcano. The deafening noise and the sight of the eruption left me feeling giddy with delight, and from that moment on, I knew I wanted to dedicate my life to the scientific world.

As a current junior, I have already begun thinking about my college major and how I can use it to make a meaningful impact in the field of health science research. With my exceptional critical thinking and analytical skills, I am confident that I can excel in this field and help address the persistent health inequalities faced by minority groups. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), minority groups such as African Americans, Hispanics, and Native Americans experience a higher burden of chronic diseases than their White counterparts. I am committed to changing this and making a positive impact through my work.

That's why I have decided to major in Chemistry with a minor in African American history. This combination of majors will provide me with a strong foundation in scientific principles and a historical understanding of healthcare disparities faced by minority groups. I believe that this unique perspective will be invaluable in my future research and allow me to make a significant contribution to the field.

As a first-generation college student and a young black woman, I understand the challenges that come with pursuing a career in health science research. But with my unwavering dedication and passion for the field, I am confident that I can achieve my goals and make a difference in the lives of those who need it most.

I am grateful for this opportunity to share my story and hope that my enthusiasm for the field of health science research shines through. I am excited to see where this journey takes me and the positive impact that I can make through my work.
