The Things I Will Be Thankful For In My College Experience by Guadalupe - November 2016 Scholarship Essay

College will be a big step in my life. It will help determine who I will be. Even though the thought of going to college scares me, it also fascinates me. As a first generation student, just going to college will be something I will be grateful for. Many people don't get the chance to go to college, depending on their situations. My mother had to stop studying to take care of us. I want to thank her the only way I could think of, which is go to college and finish.
One thing I will be thankful for in college is learning to be independent. Something I know is that when we get older, we must learn to live by ourselves. We would have to learn to do everything our parents would do for us. Going to college will help me learn to live independently. I will be able to experience the feeling of becoming an adult in college with others who are also learning.
Another thing I will be thankful for in college is the courses that I can and will take. There are so many different classes in college and trying things out of my comfort zone is something I am planning on doing when I enter college. Trying new things might help me find a career I never thought I would like.
Something I will be thankful for is the new environment. I have always wanted to go out and see the world and in college, I can do that. I can go to an out-of-state college or study abroad. I will be able to see something I haven't seen. Being adventurous is something I have wanted to pick up in college too.
I will also be thankful for the people I meet there. I am hoping to open my bubble and meet new people. I have always been a closed person who has stuck with the same group in my high school years and I want to change that. You never know if I might meet my prince charming at college!
I will be thankful for my professors and anyone who will help me strive for success. I wouldn't be able to challenge myself like professors like to challenge their students. I have always liked challenging myself whenever I can. It helps push me to try harder and do the best I can.
Lastly, I will be thankful for getting an education. My education in my way to show my community that we can change our "bad reputation." Just because people talk about how horrible and dangerous my community is, it shouldn't define us. I want to prove those who didn't expect anything from the South Side wrong. I want to show them that we are not as bad as they say and as uneducated as they think.
