How studying abroad can help my college education by Grace - November 2017 Scholarship Essay

Augustine of Hippo, a theologian and philosopher once said, “The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page.” This quote is so accurate when it comes to travel. There is so much to learn and experience through travel that you can't learn from a book or in a classroom. Traveling abroad would give me the ability to experience new cultures, learn world history, and help me figure out what I want to do. I believe that travel is such a huge aspect in changing who I am and positively effecting my college education.

Both of my parents have worked in the travel industry and lived overseas. My father is an airline captain for American Airlines and has had that job for over 25 years. My mother was a flight attendant, and ended up quitting that to pursue a different career where she studied at the Sotheby's college and lived in London. They both have been and seen many different places and have told me since young age that travel is so important to gaining new experiences and different cultures. That its the best thing that someone can do for themselves. Going abroad will allow me to experience new cultures in a way that I can't on a campus. I will be able to see how different people live and they all have different views. I will also be able to meet new people and have the ability to expand my resources.

Traveling abroad will also help me learn so much history. My history teacher has said that the best way to learn history is to experience it. So, in March my class and I are going on a 12 day AP European History tour in Europe, we are traveling to London, Normandy, Paris, Florence, and Rome. We are seeing all the things that we've learned about in our four years in high school. I know it will be a trip of a lifetime and can't wait to go! Being able to see and experience the history will better help me grasp the understand of what really was happening and get to have an experience that others might not have.

Spending time out of my comfort zone, trying and experiencing new things, I believe will help me in choosing a career best suited for me. I will be able to see what I like and dislike and while learning and experiencing new thing while finding out a lot about myself.

Traveling abroad is an experience of a lifetime. It gives an opportunity to learn, grow, meet people, and have great memories. That is something that I want to experience and to be Abe to have and I feel that it is a vital part to an education. I believe that travel is such a huge aspect in changing who I am and positively effecting my college education.
