Perseverance by Gilbert - November 2023 Scholarship Essay
Growing up as a kid I always was involved playing football and throughout the years watching football every Sunday that’s when I realized that when I grow up I want to have a job that includes football whether being a player or coach.
Playing football now helps me to relax and release all the stress I have when I’m running to catch a ball. When I’m playing in a game it helps me to build character as in being a leader and communicate. When growing up I was always shy going in and out of school meeting new people but when I would get to play football that helped me to make friends even now when I’m 18. I would go through tough times with my family having financial struggles and only living with one parent which resulted into both my brother and sister falling into alcohol and drugs but I didn’t because football was my addiction. I didn’t let anybody influence me to drugs because of the passion I wanted and the consequences that came with it in terms of football. With the situation I dealt with growing up playing football helped me persevere through the tough times and help me to grow into a stronger man. Therefore, that is why playing football is something I want to do for a portion of my life.
Senior year 2023 our practice before our first game, we practiced our new routes and doing so I went for a up out up route and in doing so I adjusted to the ball and tore a ligament in my knee. Doing so I was now ruled out for the season but that didn’t stop me from doing what I love. The next person that stepped up was a friend of my that hasn’t played football in years so I knew I could give him some tips and tricks. After I tore a ligament I still never missed a practice or game and every game and every practice I helped my friend and telling him where to cut and what to do in different situations. After this situation this helped me to realize that I could be a coach. This wasn’t a one time thing because our 6-8 grade class always idolize me because of my coach always telling them about me. So one time at practice the coach wasn’t there for 30 minutes and having to be a leader I stepped up and told the middle schoolers what to do and they listened to me because of me being a idol. So me being there idol was like if I was there coach. Therefore, that’s why I would want to be a coach.
These are the two main jobs that I want to have but having one I still would be grateful for or even being a medical staff for a team would be the next option. So being able to give back to the sport that helped me through the difficult times that I went through is the thing I would like to do for the rest of my life.
