Goals by Garrett - January 2018 Scholarship Essay
You find yourself at a crossroad in life and have a decision to make that will determine the path of your future. One decision is safe and provides you with security and reassurance and the other is a risk that could be highly beneficial, but instead could have a drastic effect. You pick the safe option because at the time, common sense tells you that this is the better option and provides for a secure life. But what if you took that risk? What if you stuck your neck out a little more than you are comfortable with and took the option that could have been the deciding factor between a "cookie cutter" lifestyle, or one that was full of accomplishments and could have even changed how the world thinks? Hopefully you would have taken the second option and would have found it to be successful, but if you did not, odds are you did not have goals set with a plan on how to accomplish them.
Goals are a vital part of anybody's future and are a substantial part of the road to success. An example of this is when I was in fifth grade and I attended my school’s band concert. As I watched the band perform, I found myself wondering what it would be like to participate. That night I set a goal to join band and be the best I can be at it. That goal was quickly turned into a reality when I was accepted into Honors Band twice and won numerous Solo and Ensemble awards. This experience taught me that Goals without a plan on how to accomplish them are not goals. They are a spur of the moment thought that will eventually be overcome by distractions and never be reached.
Goals are the basis of every success story and can be the deciding factor between a successful and unsuccessful life. They are actually the only reason why I will be attending Michigan Technological University next fall. Goals have paved the path of my future and I know that I would not be where I am today without them.
