College Experience by Gamaliel - November 2016 Scholarship Essay

College is a time in life where everything you have become accustomed to in life becomes different. You no longer depend on parents because you are an adult. Or at least you think you are. Close friends become acquaintances. This phase of your life will prompt many changes whether it be physically, mentally or spiritually. The part of a college experience I will be most thankful for is the whole experience itself. It will be a treacherous journey which will include getting my education, living in dorms and meeting new people and gaining a new-found sense of self.
Going to college will allow me to pursue my Computer Science major and obtain my Associate and Bachelor degrees. Growing up I have always dreamed of attending a post-secondary institution and paving a way for myself. For which I mean being not only financially stable but also possessing financial freedom. I have seen how economic stability affects a person’s way of life. Barely getting by is not living, it is just surviving. An example of this is my parents. They are immigrants from Haiti who have sacrificed their lives for their children. By doing so they have left everything they knew to ensure to my three siblings and I are on the journey of success. Their struggles and hardships will all be worth it will they see that my dreams will have been realized and their sacrifices were not in vain.
An additional part of my college experience that I will be grateful for is living in dorms and meeting new people. Living away from home will allow me to experience “the dorm life” for myself. I have always heard about how difficult it is to live away from your comfort zone. My comfort zone is my parents and other family members. Living away will allow me to become independent. This independence will prepare me for the real world where it is best that you rely on yourself. Being away from a city with familiar people will help me become a social butterfly and not be such an introvert. In the sense that I will be obligated to make new friends and new connections with people.
Furthermore, gaining a new-found sense of self in college will be remembered. College is a time where you find yourself per say. For me that will be joining new organizations and participating in school activities. I plan to work on myself so that I could be the best version of me that I can be. I will do this by taking up fitness. I plan to go the gym every day and develop a routine that will ultimately develop into a lifestyle. I also plan to get more educated and “woke” in the sense that I will be more involved in what’s going in the world and fighting for rights for people of color. I have always to be doing something that will help my community whether it be educating people of the history or helping the community financially. After college, I will know myself and my likes and dislikes. Knowing this will allow me to be very prepared for what life has in store for me.
