The Fox In The Subarbs by Faith - October 2016 Scholarship Essay
The great outdoors always inspire me. The beauty, the fragrances, the animals, the plant life surround me everyday. Despite the carelessness and cruelty of humans, nature has and always will survive. Our oceans breathe even though they are poisoned. The animals live and survive even though their habitats have decreased in size. Here in my suburban neighborhood, where the lawns are well kept and the gardens are orderly, my father will see a fox about once a month. I have seen opossums, armadillos, a Brazilian Skipper caterpillar and owls.
In my Sophomore year of highschool, I took AP Environmental Science, and my teacher, Ms. Williams, is an amazing, inspiring woman. Her class opened my eyes to numerous environmental problems around the world. Her class helped me see the connections, the bigger picture. No matter where we live, no matter what we do, our actions impact the environment far away from our place of residence. Whether we impact the environment negatively or positively is our choice.
Outside of the class, I began to realize how little many people know about the environment. Many people know less than I did before I started the class.
And that is why, if the roles were reversed, I would teach AP Environmental Science.
