The Write (Right) Resolution by Evan - January 2016 Scholarship Essay
Writing has always been a major part of my life and has manifested in myriad contexts through the years. Some of my earliest forays consisted of whimsical stories about towns with names like Apple Cinnamon, scrawled in red Crayola onto folded sheets of computer paper. The nature of my writing changed somewhat when I started school and began to gradually work my way through research and academic papers of increasing size and depth. Nevertheless, I still tried to make time for my creative writing pursuits; at some point during the beginning of high school, this evolved into a regular poetry practice. Recently, I’ve gotten out of this habit, so one of my 2016 New Year’s resolutions is to write something (outside of scholarship and college application essays)—be it a poem or a short play or a nonfiction piece—once a week.
While this resolution serves to keep me actively producing creative work and helps to bolster my portfolio of written product, it also comes with benefits for my performance as a student; this is something that is especially important to keep in mind as I prepare to enroll in college in the fall. Extra experience writing in various styles will help me increase both my versatility and my overall proficiency as a writer. The more practice that I can get working with interesting sentence structures or assonance or trochaic foot, the more prepared for handling college-level writing assignments I anticipate being.
Even though I enjoy writing so much, there are some days where the words just don’t seem to align the right way on the page. Or perhaps they don’t even make it to the page at all. On those days, I’ll remember the resolution I’ve made and how it is important because I am preparing myself for academic success, now and in the years to come.
