The Giver by Erica - February 2015 Scholarship Essay
Shakespeare is truly an amazing writer. His words have inspired many and people have been hooked on the plays produced. It really isn’t a surprise his work has lasted so many years! However, old English can be hard to read and people who are asked to read the plays in class tend to zone off and not get the message the storyline is telling. On that note, high school students do have a short attention span and they need books that they can relate to or they will never do their reading and try to Sparknote the summaries for an assignment.
The Giver is a well written social science fiction. A boy is given the huge responsibility to memorize all the things from the past to guide his community if it has a time of need. This isn’t easy for him and he discovers what his potential in life is along with lessons that his society desperately needs. This would be considered a good read for high school students because during these few short years, they are faced with many trials. Education becomes very important and you also discover who you really are. I believe they would be able to relate to the book as they discover their own potential in life.
