The Necessity of a Leader by Emma - March 2015 Scholarship Essay
Throughout history we can see that personal and national freedom, progress, and greatness all come from the advancement of education. In the United States, it was the opportunity of education for all that propelled our country forward. From its formation, the United States quickly set up higher education opportunities with Harvard, Yale, and The University of Pennsylvania to name a few. Growth continued as we added more higher learning institutions. Their graduates became our new leaders; our politicians, our entrepreneurs, our inventors. Therefore, successful leadership and college go hand in hand. Where do all these leadership skills come from? College.
College is an opportunity for those who want to further their education. Success will come from making the most of this opportunity. First you must apply, enroll, and pay for college. This shows initiative, an element of leadership. Once you get to college, you are given more freedom to choose how you will conduct yourself. Making wise decisions is another quality of a leader. In class, you will have to decide whether to sit back or engage. When you actively participate and put yourself out there, you are showing two more attributes of leadership; involvement and the braveness to put yourself out there. Finally, in extra curricular activities you must get involved, care, and strive for the betterment of the club, sport, or community. Again, all leadership qualities. As we can see, Yes, leadership qualities are not just necessary for college, but for the future of our country.
