My ideal career by Emilia - February 2024 Scholarship Essay
I am in my senior high school year at Wellington High School. I want to be a veterinarian. I believe that the level of development in our society is reflected in the respect to animals and wildlife preservation. In our society animals play a very important role in many people’s lives: for so many of us, animals have become members of our families. They provide emotional support, companionship, and most of the times protection.
Also, certain type of animals creates bonds with humans that allow them to be considered as Emotional Support Animals (ESAs). ESAs satisfy interpersonal needs such as inclusion, emotional control, and affection. Children with animals have shown higher levels of empathy to humans and animals. Tanking care of an animal at younger ages increases the level of responsibility and maturity and self-esteem, compared to those who had no animal bonding.
During my high school time, I served as volunteer in Vinceremus Therapeutic Center, where horses are the show stars. They are great bonding with people and help to ease anxiety, depression, and some phobias. In Vinceremus I helped in minor roles: cleaning duties, taking care of horses and helping the center visitors to ride the horses. I enjoyed the human and horse interactions.
I am a very empathic person, who likes interacting with people. I am member of the French Honors Club, and I am a student aide helping a high school counselor, preparing flyers and presentations for my classmates in different levels.
I am a member of the high school swimming team, and I was recognized as one of the most improved members. In Wellington High School I received the Positive Behavior Award.
I strongly believe that the importance of being a productive member of our society starts at a young age. I had an internship during the summer of 2023 in Florida Crystals with the Human Resources Department, and almost at the same time I started to work part-time in Publix as a cashier. With my parents’ support, I have been able to continue with my part-time and school, and I am a dual-enrollment student at Palm Beach State College.
Thanks to my internship with the Human Resources Department in Florida Crystals and my job in Publix, I have had a lot of interaction with people from different backgrounds and cultures. I am fluent in Spanish and Portuguese, and in a lower level in French. My parents are from Mexico, they emigrate to the US thanks to the NAFTA Trade, where professionals in certain areas can get VISAs to learn, work and contribute to the American Society.
In Palm Beach the police department plays an outstanding role being an active member of our community protecting and serving. They are seeing not just the force that protects against the bad people but contributor to better our society. One of the programs developed by PBSO is citizen volunteering, in which with adequate training, the volunteers help the department to focus on pressing crime issues in the community.
