Most Inspirational Teacher by Elizabeth - July 2014 Scholarship Essay
I have always had a positive attitude towards school, and have always tried to do my best in everything that I do. Many of my high school teachers have influenced my attitude towards education but one sticks out above all of the rest. His name was Mr. Depriest. He was my ninth grade band teacher.
Mr. D was always telling us that in order to achieve our best, we have to try our hardest and never give up. He showed this for my very first marching band performance through the music he picked. The poem he used to describe my first year of marching band was “The Race” which was written by D.H Groberg. The quotes from this poem that Mr. D would daily repeat to us would include “Rise each time you fall”, “Look up it said, you haven’t lost at all”, “For winning is no more than this to rise each time you fall.” Whenever I heard Mr. D say these quotes it made me want to try harder and harder to achieve what I can.
Mr. D has influenced me so much, that I have even wrote a poem about the experiences that I had during my first year of marching band with him. The poem states: “When I watch you, Standing out there on the field, The first day of practice, You had so much ambition for us, You showed me how much you cared, So I started to try harder, And harder every day, When we messed up, You always told us to “Rise each time you fall,” That made everyone, Including me, Try harder and care more about band, I stand up, Through all your confidence in us, I stand up.”
