Astrophysics and Climate Change by Elijah - December 2023 Scholarship Essay
My fascination with the celestial bodies, the principles governing them, and the mathematics that bind them together has grown over the years. Pursuing a degree in astrophysics at Penn State University symbolizes not only the completion of my academic goals but also a personal desire to discover the mysteries of the universe. My interest in science started in sixth grade when my science teacher told me about a wonderful new opportunity for students interested in the STEAM (science, technology, engineering, the arts, and mathematics) field. I remember running home to share the news with my parents about the new Steam Academy and how exciting it would be if I could attend this new school. Admission to the STEAM Academy has been essential to shaping my current academic trajectory. On a monthly basis, I actively engage in Steam challenges that center around project-based activities and research.
My engagement in these activities taught me that science is not merely a subject but a lens

through which one views the world.
In my perspective, physics serves as the means by which the universe communicates. It offers an understanding of the most fundamental questions about the origins and fate of the universe, from the behavior of quantum particles to the dynamics of galaxies. I am drawn to Penn State University because of its esteemed reputation for cultivating creativity and promoting a collaborative research environment. I aim to be a part of the renowned astrophysics program, where I can engage with leading experts and utilize state-of-the-art facilities to conduct relevant research to combat world issues like climate change. I believe Penn State University will provide me with the ideal platform to cultivate my aspirations and allow me to engage with like-minded peers in fostering a culture of shared discovery.
