The night is mine by Elijah - January 2019 Scholarship Essay
At night, when my family succumbs to the will of sleep, I always say that I have more to do before I am ready to lie down. I am and have always been a night owl. Ever since I was a little kid, I have enjoyed staying up late in the night, watching a movie, playing video game, surfing the web, or reading a book I am invested in.
I think the reason I am more productive at night is because I have the night all to myself. In the morning, I awake, knowing that school will be there to absorb most of my day away like a sponge. In the afternoon, I will be dedicated to homework, chores, and other random tasks of the day. But at night, I know it is my time to lie in bed reading a book or take a walk through the house, listening to the house creak and crack with every step I take. I can also think about everything and anything. I sometimes think about the world, strange questions, or just ponder the events of the day. When the sounds of the house abate, I enjoy the quietness to myself, accompanied by natural noises outside my window. I live in the country, so the sounds of owls, bugs, and animals are not a surprise. In fact, they are a warm welcome. They make me contemplate my existence in this world. Instead of being distracted with my tasks of the day, I am surrounded by my thoughts and ideas. I wonder if the world can ever truly be happy? Why is the sky blue? What has happened to rock n’ roll? It is a time to myself, a nocturnal individual surrounded by my own world.
