"The Quote That Describes Me" by Dylan - November 2018 Scholarship Essay
“To live is to risk it all, otherwise you’re just an inert chunk of randomly assembled molecules drifting wherever the Universe blows you.” This quote, being one of my favorite quotes from the popular science-fiction/comedy show “Rick and Morty”, pertains to my perspective on life and my lifestyle. “To live is to risk it all...” is in many ways true. In my opinion, in order to succeed or push forward in life is to risk what others are too afraid to do. If you do not take risks that are said to be “too risky” or “too far a reach”, then you will never find out how far you may be able to go in life and inevitably live a set course established by society and fear. In short, if you are unable to take risks, then you will have to agree to living like everybody else. I believe to succeed, is to risk failure, much like how former President Franklin D. Roosevelt, unlike all former presidents whom failed to break the “8-year term” precedent established by George Washington, risked failure and succeeded in serving more than 12 years in office before the 22nd Amendment was ratified. Like FDR, I too have risked failure in order to succeed. In lacrosse, I risked taking a game winning shot for my team in which I failed to score. In failing, this motivated me so greatly that the next game I risked taking the shot again, but that time I succeeded. “...otherwise you’re just an inert chunk of randomly assembled molecules drifting wherever the Universe blows you.” relates to my perspective on life as well. In my opinion I believe that if you are just an ordinary person, you won’t ever stand out. Personally, I would rather be unique, take chances, and influence others than be ordinary which forces you to be trapped in social norms and trends. Not only this, this quote shows the love I have for science, science-fiction, and comedy which have been important aspects throughout the course of my life.
