College Experience by Desiree - November 2016 Scholarship Essay

During college, we will have many experiences unlike any other in our lives. College unlike high school is the time where you get to choose. You could go anywhere you wanted to -- even out of state. High school is where you get your basic life classes. College however is where you get more life experience, and you learn more about occupations you plan to pursue. If I were to be thankful for any college experience, it would be the experience of throwing myself in an unknown environment and learning how to grab life by the reins and take control. The life lessons that come out of college is something most people hold on to.
There are 50 states here in America. In each of those fifty states, there are anywhere from tens to hundreds of colleges. The chances of you going to college with more than one person you knew from high school are slim to none. In college you will meet tons of new people. Something you can’t do without just throwing yourself out there and not being shy. To make friends this way helps us learn how to interact with society on our own. Especially when it comes to classes because if you don't apply yourself and ask questions, no professor will go out of their way to make sure you completely understand the topic.
This leads me to my next paragraph, learning to listen, and take things seriously, which something most teenagers have a problem with. Professors sometimes can be ruthless -- high school teachers try to prepare us for this. However for us teenagers, we never take anything seriously. The professors will not slow down their lecture or stop for us to write everything down. We have to figure it out on our own. If we zone out and are not listening to the lecture, well lets hope by this point we have learned to make friends and ask for some notes because if not, we’re not going to do so well on the exam. So in this process, our attention span will expand, and so will our skills to listen and comprehend.
These life lessons will lead to the lesson of success. In order to succeed, these two basic things need to happen. We need to be able to socially interact with our society as well as learning to listen. Without these things we will not be comfortable with job interviews, or even learning how to do our jobs when we’re in the learning field. That is why i would most be grateful for the life lessons that come out of the college experience, as opposed to anything else.
