Who Is Jane Goodall by Denise - October 2023 Scholarship Essay

If I could spend time with anyone, I would choose Jane Goodall. Ever since I was in second grade and read “Who Is Jane Goodall” she has been my hero. At that time in my life, I had not heard of many women leaders in science. In school, we always heard about men like Tomas Edison, Benjamin Franklin, and Albert Einstein, but women and their achievements are often overlooked. When little me found out that women can be just as impressive, she was overjoyed.
Jane Goodall was a pioneer not only for science but also for women and their abilities. She went into the jungles of Gombe to study chimpanzees in a way that had never been seen before. Many people did not believe that Goodall would be able to accomplish her goals because they doubted her for her gender and level of education, but she proved all of them wrong. She is a brilliant leader who paved the way for field studies of animals and women in science.
That “Who Is” book that I read at age 8 has impacted my life in so many ways. Jane Goodall is my hero and my dream is to be just like her. I want to go into field science and work with National Geographic. A simple book on a 2nd grade shelf has made me who I am today and is the only thing I have read that had such a significant impact on me.
