New Promises by Demi - January 2016 Scholarship Essay
A new year signifies new beginnings and fresh starts. As a new academic semester rolls around, students are feeling the pressure to do better now, in order to make up for wasted time in the previous year. Although many personally believe that taking better notes, or not falling asleep in class with revive their dying GPA, I believe that managing my time more efficiently and wisely will relieve my academic frustrations, and lead to growth and productivity.
It is easy to overwhelm yourself with an abundance of tasks and homework assignments all due around the same time, and I, among thousands of other students, fall victim to this plague. It is a problem that clouds my judgement, tires my eyes, and leads to careless mistakes. It is important to compartmentalize tasks in order to avoid the burden of a heavy load of classwork. Homework assignments and study sessions are essential to doing well in school, however, by wearing down my body I am only chiseling away at the possibility of being able to learn a new lesson, while at the same time fighting a losing battle with sleep deprivation.
My New Year's Resolution is not to start that new diet I was supposed to begin last January 1st, but it is to take care of myself. By ensuring that I get enough sleep, eat an apple every once in awhile, and and manage my time in a way that makes it easy to finish tedious assignments, I am opening up the door to further learning comprehension and knowledge. By doing this I will be able to stay focused, determined, and perform to the best of my ability. The New Year brings about new promises, and the best promise I can make to myself, is the promise to be a better student this new year.
