What would your dream classroom look like? How would it help you excel as a student? by Demetrius - July 2020 Scholarship Essay
As a student and a lifelong continual learner, I am always looking for ways to maximize my experience in the classroom and to enhance my success in the learning environment. There is no one fit for all classrooms set up as we learn in different ways and at different paces. When considering my dream classroom, I was led to ponder over my learning experiences in school and to reflect on the ones that I was most engaged and successful in the environment.
Initially, a dream classroom should be one that is inviting, warm and safe. It should be a classroom where learning is the optimal goal and one where real life experiences are integrated into the learning environment. It should capitalize on flexibility, mobility and the need to meet all learners. The classroom should be student centered and student led and not one where the teacher is the only lead in the classroom. It should be full of laughter, dialogue and transparency.
Secondly, it should be one where the students are thriving and not afraid to make mistakes. One where we are taught that it is okay to make mistakes as long as we learn from our mistakes, fix them and keep forging ahead. It should be a classroom where we are all working toward our individual and collective goals. The classroom should also be positive and organized with clear, realistic expectations, rules and consequences.
Lastly, my dream classroom would be one where the teacher is confident, compassionate, and believes in my success. The teacher would also be one to offer constructive criticism and present the material in multiple ways to meet our needs. In addition, the teacher would be friendly, patient and a good listener. The teacher would also be a motivator and one who encourages; one who will keep pushing us to reach our goals and to excel to the next level.
