My main obstacle in life by Danylo - November 2019 Scholarship Essay
I have experienced numerous obstacles in my life, but, the level of corruption in Ukraine had affected me the most.
Until six years ago, I resided in Ukraine. This Eastern European country has been plagued with corruption since its independence in 1991. One of those was Soviet oligarchic influence in the Ukrainian politics which still lasts to this day. Due to the fear of progress and the West, Ukrainian government has been slow to adapt develop a sustainable democracy. Many citizens could not advance in society. They dreamed about making the difference on the internal affairs of Ukraine. They dreamed of making Ukraine a Western country, a pinnacle of personal and economic freedom. I was one of these people. Sadly, the government would not give in. Many of prestigious schools were still overwhelmingly populated by the children of the politicians and upper echelons of society. I thought this was the end for my dream.
In 2013, I had a chance to move to the United States. I was ecstatic when I realized that I could be or do anything that I can put my mind to. Soon, I had forgotten about the days of worrying about my future. I finally had an access to the world's finest education. I could pursue my passion of having an ability to help to improve the equality in the justice system. I have always wanted to be a lawyer because I wanted to see justice truly be blind and the forces of evil prosecuted for their crimes. This is my view of the American Dream.
Going to an internationally recognized institution is one of the steps in my way to overcoming the problem I lived. I can finally see my dream come true. I would no longer need to worry about injustice because someone with more capital than myself bribed the powers of the nation. I can live in a society where justice, rather than the finance rules. I can at last make the difference I desire.
