Goals without Desire, Is like a Boat without Water. by Danielle - January 2018 Scholarship Essay
Desire.
The one word I choose to describe why I wish to attend college, is Desire.
Most people would probably say opportunity, independence, future, career or family. None of that is possible without a certain amount of desire. You can say you want to go to college to better yourself, that you want to go to college to make more opportunities for yourself, that you want to go to college to better your future, or to get to the career you want, or because your the first in your family to do so, or to get out of the house and be on your own. But none of that will happen without the desire to make it happen.
Growing up, my mom always said, “you can do anything you put your mind to, anything your little heart desires”. You can say all the right things, but when push comes to shove, you are hit with hard times and nothing is going the way you want or imagined. When it gets harder than you thought it would be, in the back of your mind are all the things that got you where you are, your goals. All of the opportunities you have in front of you, the future career you want, not letting your family down but without the desire to make those happen, they won't.
Desire is more than a word to me, it is a necessity for life. You can set and have a million goals for yourself, but nothing will be accomplished without the desire to get it done.
My goal is to earn a Social Work degree with a Minor in Psychology, but it is driven by my desire to help kids and become a better version of me. I want to go on and help families and children that have goals and dreams but don’t know what it means to have the desire to accomplish those goals and dreams. People have told me, “no you can't” but I had the desire to do it and prove them wrong, and i did. I want to be there for those kids like me, be the one to tell and show them, “yes you can”, you can do anything you put your mind to, anything your heart desires.
