Don't Forget by Cynthia - November 2018 Scholarship Essay

“Never forgetting from where I came, and no matter where I’m headed I promise to stay the same” sings Drake in the song “Unforgettable.” This is a quote, that just like the song, I will never forget. It “hits” a soft place in my heart deeply. There are two reasons as to why this was my senior year quote and why I chose it.
From elementary school up to my junior year of high school I was embarrassed to show my Hispanic side. I grew up in Paso Robles, California where most of the population was Caucasian. I saw many children be criticized for listening to Spanish music and heard many people yell, “Speak Spanish you’re in America!” My parents were born in Mazatlán, Mexico. It is a beautiful city with a gorgeous beach. I went every year for Christmas up to my senior year of high school. I loved being there and when I came back from Christmas break I felt that I couldn’t express how much I enjoyed being there. When I couldn’t go anymore, I changed my mindset. I didn’t care who was walking outside my apartment I was blaring the Spanish music. I loved boasting about how the city I would visit and my culture was beautiful. I love the food we make, how close our family is, the values we hold. I wish I would’ve never been ashamed. I love my roots and I will never forget that I am an American with Mexican blood. But this isn’t the only reason why I love this quote.
They say money is the root of all evil. I’ve seen money change many people especially people who I graduated with in high school. I never thought that a piece of paper could change the way somebody carries themselves but it does. Money is necessary in America, there is no way to avoid it. The problem is when money destroys humility. Many stop talking to others because they make more money than them. Others look down on people including their own family. I will never look down on somebody because of their money situation. I believe that everyone works hard for their well-being economically should be valued. Whether it’s working at McDonald’s or being a large business owner, everyone deserves to be treated like a person. I’ve gone from a place where I made good money, now I don’t make money, since I’m a full time college student. I know when I graduate and go find a job as a dental hygienist I’ll be the same person I am as a broke college student.
I’ve lived up to my senior year quote and I will always. It is important to remember where we came from regardless of how crazy the world may be. Always remember who you are deep inside, because in times of need you will always come back to find yourself.
