Dr. Jones by Christine - July 2014 Scholarship Essay
Having started my education almost 30 years ago, it has sometimes been a little bit depressing to see my classmates graduate as I stay remaining to work towards my degree. Many of my professors have been encouraging however Dr. Jones has had an enormous impact on my academic career.
Dr. Jones has been one of my professors in a few classes for the past 2 years. During this time she worked as an academic advisor, a professor, a mother, wife, and student. In addition to those roles she oversaw her own non-profit organization, as well as remained active in her church. Dr. Jones served as an example, allowing me to be able to see someone working towards her academic goals, while being involved in so many other important roles, that with determination anything is possible.
During my lengthy academic journey, I have encountered many obstacles and opportunities of challenge. Having had Dr. Jones as an instructor during the time I faced some of these hurdles was a gift at best. Dr. Jones was not only understanding, she was encouraging and worked with me motivating me and helping me move beyond those things with success.
Being able to watch someone I actually knew pursue her doctorate degree was an eye opening experience for me. Seeing her go beyond her Master’s Degree, made me want to go further than only obtaining my Bachelor’s Degree, which had originally been my goal.
God has placed many academic angels in my path during the past 28 years, and Dr. Jones has been one that has made a monumental difference in whether I failed or succeeded as she rooted for me and impressed upon me the importance of going on knocking out my goals one by one.
There have been a few times that I wanted to change my mind, and not complete my Bachelors of Social Work Degree. There have been so many life changing traumatic things that have occurred during my lifetime that have affected my scholastic journey. Having Dr. Jones as a professor has been a blessing because she has given some real life examples of triumphs she has overcome of obstacles she has faced in her life. Her transparency, and realistic views gleaned from her hands on experiences have made a great impact in my life. Dr. Jones is definitely a professor who has positively affected my attitude towards education as well as other aspects in my life.
