The Power of Girl Scouts by Christina - September 2015 Scholarship Essay
Every day we are faced with lessons in school that helps us grow as students. We students even continue learning out of school in the outside world. For me a situation where I learned to be a better student at school was being a part of an organization by the name of Girl Scouts.
Every sunday we would have a group meeting to discuss upcoming events and different projects we could do to achieve badges. During these sunday meetings, we learned what it meant to come together as a team. This particular lesson is an important part to being an exceptional scholar in school because in some classes it is mandatory to complete a project in groups. If the work isn't divided equally and certain ones begin slacking, the whole project could blow up. If there is no communication as well, than the project may clash trying to put it together in the end.
We also did many hours of community service which taught us to give back. For instance, over the summer we went to Belle Glade and fed the homeless at a church. This experience taught us to help one another when in need rather than tear them down. On a daily basis in school, kids are being picked on for their appearance or the way they act. However, what most students don't realize is they don't know what that individual is facing at home. This event was able to help us grow to become better students toward each other at school. We also donated Girl Scout cookies to the military. During our cookie sales we raised money for the cookies to be sent to the troops as a thank you from not only us but from citizens as well.
Another great opportunity that Girl Scouts offered us was the skill of time management. We all know that time management is something everyone struggles with at some point. It can be very challenging in high school to balance homework, a job, and trying to figure out what college to apply to. Especially senior year, it can not only be short on time, but very stressful. One of the lessons we were taught was how to use a daily planner. That might sound silly and very simple, but it isn't your ordinary planner. Most people get a typical calendar and just put important events like eye doctor appointment at noon. However, the planner we were shown goes by hour. At first it may seem like too much and a jumbled time consuming mess, but think about it. While you are eating your breakfast or doing something simple in the usual morning routine, just take a few minutes to plan out your day. You don't have to write essay style or even spell correctly. All you need is a quick few words just to have a basic idea of what is happening throughout the day. On the side of this planner the notes are located. Here one can put things like goals for the day. For instance, "clean room." It is like a checklist and at the end of the day you can review it to see what you didn't get to and what you did manage to finish. This will help set a schedule and use time wisely. This skill can be very helpful not only in school, but even in the future when one is balancing a career and family.
Girl Scouts has helped me grow not only as a student, but as an individual as well. It has taught me how to come together as a team, to help our community in times of need, and to consume time wisely. These lessons taught outside of school can even continue to help me in the "real world."
