Helping Friends In Need by Christina - December 2019 Scholarship Essay

In my fifth grade, I was required to do some community service for my school project. I decided to ask around my neighborhood for donations in the form of food and supplies to collect and send to my local animal shelter. I placed flyers in each of my neighbors’ mailbox, explaining my project and how I would be collecting donations for the local animal shelter. A few weeks afterward, I walked around my neighborhood gathering all the donations they had left out for collection. After obtaining all the donations, I went to the animal shelter and gave the materials collected. They were very grateful for the donations and showed me all the animals that lived at the shelter who would benefit from them. I was very surprised to see so many cats and dogs considering how small the shelter was and how little supplies there were in its storage rooms.

After visiting and donating to the animal shelter, I felt useful and helpful to their cause. Even the smallest donations made a difference in helping them support and care for the animals. Although it started as a required fifth grade project, I ended up starting a club in my school where the purpose of the club was to collect donations from the entire school and donate to the many animal shelters in our area. I enjoyed the feeling of doing the most that I could to help my community. The shelters rely on donations and are grateful for any donations possible no matter how big or how small.
