Forestall by Christina - January 2018 Scholarship Essay
If I could choose one word to describe why I wish to attend college, I would choose the word 'forestall'. The reason I chose this word is because of my major, past life events, and wanting a better future for our country.
My current major is Criminal Justice. I chose this field because protecting the good people on this planet from the bad is more important than sitting back and watching chaos unfold. Law enforcement and federal agencies have a bad reputation for terrible events happening on their watch, such as police brutality, political issues, and terrorist attacks. Yet, more and more people choose to become agents or officers, and that is because they want to serve and protect. I think being an agent or officer would forestall the actions of horrible people and make the world a safer place.
A few years ago, someone broke into my home. They came in and only stole my father's guns. It was scary knowing that someone was out there with numerous weapons, who knew how to break into our home, and could come back at any time and hurt us. But, that event could have been forestalled if we had set the alarm in our house. Our inability and laziness to set our own alarm in the house led to someone stealing multiple firearms from our house without penalty. It was definitely an eye-opener and helped me into my transition of wanting to become a federal agent.
Becoming a federal agent will not only benefit myself, but also our country. Every day, the FBI is taking monsters off the street and posting pictures of those who need to be caught. Also, they are catching online hackers, embezzlers, terrorists, and more just because of their efficiency. FBI agents are trained not only to protect, but also to forestall. They forestall murder, rape, fraud, robbery, arson, extortion, and more for the U.S. This ability to forestall fueled my passion for criminal justice.
