Defining Me by Chloe - November 2018 Scholarship Essay

I started thinking about a senior quote at the beginning of the school year. I wanted a quote that I could think about throughout the year that could motivate me to take opportunities and to help me grow as a person. I immediately thought of my all time favorite quote. “It’s not about who I am underneath, but what I do that defines me.” This notorious line is said by Bruce Wayne, played by Christian Bale in the 2005 DC Comic film Batman Begins. Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy is one of my favorites, but that isn’t the main reason why I cherish this quote.
Throughout my years of high school I’ve learned that actions matter more than aspirations. Although it’s great to create goals for yourself, you’ll never achieve them if you don’t take actions to achieve them. For example, say you tell your parents that you are going to get better grades. Say there are reasons distracting you and you never get better grades. Your parents are not going to care about what you meant to do. They will only care about what you do or what you have done to get better grades. This also applies to society. People will remember what you do to help the community. They will never know what you meant to do or wanted to do.
What I have done in the past defines who I am today. I have volunteered a lot around my town. You could say that I am involved in my community and that I like helping others. There were some things that I thought about doing but never got around to it. I am regretting that now but from now on I will take what is offered to me. I will think about this quote when I get offered opportunities to help the community and to help me grow stronger as a person. This quote motivates me to get work done and to take new challenges. Through this quote I am reminded that I need to continue to build my human capital. By doing this I can meet new people and possibly get to travel different places. Building my human capital was extremely important in high school and will still be equally important post high school. Going to college would give me the chance to help the community and take opportunities to grow my knowledge in whatever I choose to study.
