Learning with Holograms by Chloe - February 2018 Scholarship Essay
Holograms are all the rage in the science and technology world today. Though they are by no means perfect or ready for an educational setting, advances in this technology are moving at an alarming rate. I fully believe that in the next thirty years, holograms will be fully functional and fully integrated into the education system.
Until recently, holograms had to be projected onto a medium, such as glass or plastic, to make the object seem 3 dimensional to the viewer, but only when they stand a certain way. It was about as functional to us as a lava lamp. But now, a team of researchers at Brigham Young University have developed a new device that creates three-dimensional images that are sort of like holograms, but on steroids. Its a huge leap in the advancement in this technology. Though the projections are limited to miniscule models, this is a stepping stone for the expansion of this technology for the future.
Imagine taking a geometry class and being able to manipulate a 3 dimensional hologram of a dodecahedron, or standing in front of a holographic house and being able to see its surface area and volume. Imagine sitting in a history class and watching the revolutionary war happening all around you. Imagine a chemistry class, where you are able to do highly dangerous labs because the substances are only holograms. Imagine an Astronomy class, where you can stand on the sun and watch the planets as they orbit around you. This sounds a lot like virtual reality, but with no headset and still being able to see the people and environment around you. All the while immersed in an amazing way of learning. Holograms would make the subjects we learn in school more tangible and easier to apply to real life.
I believe that all of this in possible in the year of 2038. Everyday, a new discovery is made, a new idea born, a technology advanced. As humans, this is what we strive for. We live to advance all of humankind. And what's going to stop us? Absolutely nothing. We'll always have someone who invents, builds, creates, and dreams. And the sooner we realize this, the sooner we'll find that nothing is impossible.
