My Volunteer Experience by Caroline - May 2018 Scholarship Essay

I have been fortunate to have a variety of volunteer opportunities. I learn and grow from each one. The most significant volunteer opportunity for me is working at the Discovery Program through the YMCA.
The Discovery Program is a before and after school program for children ages 4-12. The program also provides summer camp when school is not is session. When I was in elementary school I attended the Discovery Program. As I became a teenager, it was a privilege for me to volunteer and give back to a program that meant so much to me. Currently, I am employed by the YMCA and I am a counselor for the children in the Discovery Program.

This program allows me to work with children after school with homework, to create crafts and to become physically active by playing games. When the students arrive to the program we work on homework. I am able to help the children when needed with assignments that are difficult. I show the children a fun way to learn or remember the concept they are struggling with.

Craft time at Discovery has always been my favorite part of the day. I love art! I plan to major in art in some form when I attend college. I enjoy seeing the children’s faces light up when they complete a craft. They are so excited to show their parents what they accomplished. I believe the art projects build self-esteem in the children. They can use their imagination to create something wonderful. When it comes to art and crafts there is no right or wrong answer, the children can be creative and the sky is the limit.

During game time, I have the opportunity to help the children understand winning and losing. This can be in a game of kickball or a board game, it is important to understand good sportsmanship and a positive attitude. I have learned both along with teamwork as a member of the varsity basketball team at Rustburg High School.

Volunteer work is a chance for me to give back to my community. I enjoy being able to help people. I plan to continue my volunteer work while in high school and college. I have a sense of pride to know something I have done can make a difference for another person.
