My Academic Inspiration by Canon - October 2019 Scholarship Essay
The person that inspires me to do my best academically is my calculus teacher, Mrs. Volk. When I walked into class on the first day of school this year I was really intimidated by all of the students around me. These were the students who had been taking advanced math for all of junior high and the beginning of high school. They definitely had more experience than me in dealing with the vigorous curriculum. Naturally, I was nervous, but I had heard great things about Volk’s class and I soon realized I had nothing to fear. She was kind and extremely supportive. When I was struggling with major concepts, not only did she help me to understand my errors, but she walked me through the material repeatedly until I mastered it.
When Mrs. Volk isn’t in teaching, she’s always busy with other great tasks. She is the supervisor of the National Honor Society, which I am gladly a part of because of her. She encourages all students to try their best in school so they can also participate. Additionally, she assists students who need extra help during SIR. Her personal connection with each and every student is something that really inspires me. I feel obligated to work as hard as I can on her assignments and tests because I know how much effort she puts into grading them.
Among other things, Mrs. Volk is probably the smartest person I know. I’m amazed at everything she’s been able to accomplish in life and I want the exact same for myself. When I go to college, I’ll most likely choose a major in the math field.
In short, Mrs. Volk is my academic inspiration because she believes in me. She expects me to try my hardest and I’m grateful for that.
