Where I See Myself in Ten Years by Caleb - June 2023 Scholarship Essay
In August 2023, I plan to start a new chapter of my life while attending Clemson University. I will advance my education at Clemson's College of Engineering to receive a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering. While at college, I hope to live on campus in Mickel Hall as part of the RISE Program, which allows me to live in housing surrounded by other people with a similar major as I do in a STEM field.
While in high school, I participated in a program called the Scholars Academy, which allowed me to take most of my general education courses such as my fine arts and basic math and sciences. Attending Scholars also allowed me to get a feeling of what it is like to be in a college environment with other students and a more challenging course load. Therefore, when I arrive at Clemson, my general education requirements will be met since I took those classes while attending Scholars, and I will be able to have an easier adjustment to the college lifestyle since I am already familiar with study tactics and what most college professors expect in the classroom. I also will take part in internships and other programs that will give me experience as to what it is like being an engineer and how to properly perform my job. These internships can range anywhere from shadowing another experienced engineer, where I can take tips and learn what skills it takes to be a successful engineer.
After graduating from Clemson and receiving my bachelor's degree, within ten years, I plan to be working for an engineering firm somewhere close to where my family lives in the Upstate of South Carolina. I want to be responsible for the construction of major projects such as office buildings or plants for new businesses, and overall just helping develop the city I grew up in. An important aspect of civil engineering is that I will be "hands-on" when working on a project, such as visiting construction sites, and helping where needed, which is what makes this major more appealing to me. In addition, after I gain enough experience, such as after, I intend to open my engineering firm to oversee projects that interest me and uphold the level of standards I have had all throughout my life.
Ultimately, graduating from Clemson and going into the engineering field has always been my dream since I was in elementary, and I am grateful that I finally have the opportunity to fulfill that goal. Furthermore, the education I receive from Clemson will help me better understand how to be not only a better engineer, but a better citizen that contributes to the community and world I lives in.
