What About College I am Most Looking Forward To by Britney - November 2016 Scholarship Essay

As college becomes more of a reality with each day, it loses the apparent feeling of doom that it has been associated with for the past few years. When high school ends I am ushered into a new life so instead of being scared about it, I should now be proactive and thankful. When I was ten years old the idea of going to college was scary because I would be living by myself, taking difficult classes and be away from home. Now that I realize this time next year I will be well into my first college term, I could not be more excited. I cannot help but to think that when I come home for Thanksgiving what I would tell my family that I am most thankful for in my college experience.
First, I believe I would be most thankful for my new living situation. I have never lived semi-independently and as I move to college I am in charge of my own meals and daily routine. I will be given my first taste of true independence. No one will be telling me when to wake up and start my day or that I need to clean my room, I have power over myself. I expect to feel liberated to achieve so many things. I will be motivated because I am not being told to do these things but doing them because I genuinely want to or need to. I am responsible for my own laundry and designing my own health style that fits my needs and best interests. I can spend my money on what I want because I will be making it myself and formulating my own budget.
Next, I will be extremely thankful for the classes that my colleges has to offer. The major factor that differs from High School to College is that I am able to pick my courses depending upon the career that I wish to go into. I will be taking career related classes with hands-on experience because those are the kind of classes that I want to take. I will take classes that interest me and make me think. I will explore the field of study that I wish to and not what is required by a tightly enforced curriculum plan with very little room for me to differ in education with my peers. I will become specialized in my field because it will bring me joy to help others through healthcare. I am thankful already that I will be given the opportunity to make the world a better place by pursuing a postsecondary education.
Thirdly, I can predict that I will be thankful for the environment I live in. I cannot think of any other situation in my life where I will be in such an incredibly tight-nit community as I will be in my college residence hall. Just in my visits to colleges I can see how the students band together to support each other and make college the best possible experience for all the people there. I can tell that I will make brand new friends that will last a lifetime. I will be exposed to people that have the same interests as me and encourage me to grow into an adult by making mistakes. Being taken out of the town that I have grown up in will give me the power to shape my own identity. Through trial and error I will discover my personal views, feelings, and morals to become a knowledgeable adult.
Each time I think about what college holds in the future for me, I become more and more jubilant in the idea of what it will do for me. I will emerge a better and smarter adult. Many people, of all ages, have told me how amazing college is because it gives a person independence, useful education, and is a time to grow as an individual. There are many other wonderful things to be thankful for that only going to college will give me, but I will not truly know them until I venture out on my own and experience college first hand.
