Change to Nursing by Brenda - June 2020 Scholarship Essay
When an individual is little they always dream of being a princess or police officer, but throughout their lives, that dream always changes. My dream has changed as well, however, it has stayed in the same field. My goal is to major in nursing and become a pediatric nurse. I chose pediatrics because growing up I was always the type of girl to help everyone, especially kids. I loved being responsible for them and taking care of them. Being an adult now I realize that I want to make it my career. Pediatricians are a group of compassionate people to me. They see the joy and humor in life despite going through some unbelievable tragedies. The way they deal with kids and how strong they are after their sad and happy experiences has led me to Pediatrics. Although, today's world is very different.
Today's society is very diverse. I know how hard it is for a Spanish speaking person to feel comfortable or secure with someone who doesn’t speak their language. In personal experiences, being able to talk to someone in your language makes you feel at home and is less stressful especially having to talk about your child and wanting to know what’s wrong. Coming from a Mexican background and being able to not just speak English but also Spanish is very special to me. I want to be able to make the Latinx community feel secure and comfortable. I want them to know there are more people in this world thinking of them and want to help them.
Pediatric nurses and nurses, in general, don’t just deal with the child but the parents as well which are usually the toughest part. I want to dedicate my time to a child’s health because I understand how a parent would feel knowing that something bad is going on with their child. As everyone knows kids don’t respond to illnesses, treatment, and the help a nurse gives them as an adult would respond. Sometimes these children of all ages, especially teenagers, can’t talk to their parents. In my own experience, I know all a teenager needs is someone that can help them or someone who will be there for them through their journey letting them know they will get through it and that they’re strong. I want to be that person that brings joy and comfort into the life of an ill person and their family.
I want to succeed in my future to help out my family. Even though dad has worked hard for everything we need it's still not enough for me to continue my career. My mom will be giving birth to my third brother and I will mostly be taking care of my baby brother due to her being diagnosed with a rare incurable sickness called Chiari Malformation more than three years ago. She will be having surgery on her hands after she gives birth due to muscle weakness and numbness in her hands. The leftover money my dad would be paid would be used for my mom's medication and surgery. I hadn't been able to work myself because we couldn't afford to get a car for me to go to work. My dad didn't want me to stop going to school so he worked even harder to get what I needed whether it was to pay for school, sports, etc... I want to pursue nursing so I can care for my baby brother and mom. I have many goals and every single one of them has a purpose and story behind them. These are just two of my passionate goals that I hope to accomplish.
