Beyond the Classroom by Benton - March 2023 Scholarship Essay
If you search Google for “Fred Coleman,” you will find that he played in the XFL and NFL, won a Super Bowl, is from Tyler, Texas, and graduated with a law degree from the University of Washington, but what you won’t see is the most genuine, humble, personable, hardworking, mentor, and friend that I know. Fred is the youngest of eight children and now has two children. Family is important to him, and being in his circle means you are family.
Fred Coleman is my trainer and mentor. His wisdom and workouts prepared me for my varsity football season at Braswell and college. He taught me to be relentless in my drive for success and to meet each challenge with a smile. Every time we meet to train, he greets me with a big grin and a heart full of kindness. During training sessions, he pushes me beyond my limits and never lets me give up on myself. Drill after drill, we work to improve whether it is in the heat of July or the rain of March. His athletic influence has instilled in me the ability to move on the field without thinking, the value of believing in yourself, and that no amount of talent will succeed if hard work is not paired with it.
Fred’s influence does not stop on the field. Fred’s love and passion are apparent in every action he takes. This dedication motivates everyone around him, and his charism is contagious. His positive energy, sincere attitude, encouragement, and kindness will follow me into each chapter of my life. As a teacher and coach, he works to produce well-rounded, respectful athletes who strive to reach their personal best. He encourages the more talented athletes and those who struggle to keep learning and to try to improve their skills and realize their potential.
The world needs more leaders like Fred Coleman. However, if you ask Fred if he is a leader, he will grin sheepishly and say he does not see himself as a leader. In most cases, he avoids the spotlight and would rather let the light shine on others. Despite this, Fred is a neighborhood hero to many, and his inspiration extends far beyond the Texas community where he lives and teaches. Coach Coleman continues to create a legacy of excellence for those fortunate enough to become his students, colleagues, friends, and family.
I cannot think of a harder-working individual who believes in success through hard work. Fred does not let anything stand in his way and accepts no excuses. He believed in me even when I struggled to find that strength in myself, and I have watched him do this for countless others. I have had many great people in my life who have supported me, counseled me, and even coached me. Still, Fred has profoundly impacted my professional philosophy and inspired me to pursue coaching and personal training to help others reach their goals.
