Summary of Interests by Benny - January 2025 Scholarship Essay

I am a student-athlete and Muskingum University. I am pursuing General engineering, which is a mixture of mechanical engineering and electrical engineering while playing baseball for the Muskies. I am the second oldest of four. My older brother is currently attending college as an undergraduate, and I have a younger brother and sister who will both be starting their college career in the next three years. With all of us in college around the same time, money can be stretched thin. Any scholarships we get go a long way.
I chose my field of study to be engineering due to my attitude towards it at an early age. I enjoyed working on bikes as a kid, both repairing them and modifying them. As I got older, I helped my dad with simple and complex car repairs and maintenance. In high school, I always enjoyed and did better in science math courses. After my first three semesters in college, I cannot see myself in any other field due to my enjoyment and dedication towards engineering. I have completed a 130-hour co-op at a local metal works company as an engineering apprentice. I have expanded my knowledge beyond the classroom, learning skills I would not in a classroom. I plan on doing another co-op with this company again in the upcoming years.
Starting in middle school, I regularly started to volunteer around my community. During the winter season I would volunteer my time at a community field house where I would set up seating, basketball hoops and run concessions. A community initiative to clean up started up when I got into high school where I would pick up trash along streets, in parks, and other parts of my city. I also was a volunteer coach for a youth softball team for three years and helps put together and run a school field day. Since I have been in college, I have continued serving my community. Once a week over a stretch of two months, some fellow teammates and I would go to a local school and spend time with students in an after-school program. We would help them with their schoolwork and then play games in a gymnasium or playground with the kids. Additionally, I have participated in multiple campus clean ups and community clean ups as well as working as security for a community festival. Through my community service I have made valuable connections and gotten closer with my community.
All in all, I have a passion for engineering. Though I enjoy my free time playing baseball and spending time in my community, I have high aspirations for my engineering career.
