A Lifelong Commitment Towards Disruptive Innovation by Benjamin - February 2024 Scholarship Essay

My name is Benjamin David, a Native American and Caucasian man who has developed an unquenchable thirst for technology and its application in the world of finance. As a recently graduated high school student with a 3.75 GPA, I am thrilled at the opportunity to apply for the Varsity Tutors College Scholarship Contest. I plan to major in Computer Science/Programming and Finance at my first choice, the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss), or alternatively at The University of Louisiana at Monroe.

My first personal computer was an old Compaq Presario. It was not the newest model on the market when it fell into my hands, but, to me, it represented a realm of limitless possibilities. It was on that computer that I learned to code, initially to develop simple games and apps out of sheer curiosity. But as I grew older, my interest in programming matured, and I started recognizing its potential as a powerful tool to transform lives.

My concurrent interest in finance was stoked by my observation of the increased intersection between technology and finance. The rise of FinTech, cryptocurrencies, and blockchain technology is fundamentally changing the finance industry's landscape. It was this realization that consolidated my desire to further my education in Computer Science and Finance.

As a member of the Native American community, I am struck by the potential of technology to make a far-reaching impact, even in remote and underserved communities. Financial inclusion is a challenge that confronts many minority communities, like mine. With my education, I am keen to leverage the disruptive power of technology to make financial services more accessible to these groups.

I am also committed to fostering diversity and inclusion in technology and finance. Although these fields have seen progress, diversity is still a challenge. As a man of Native American and Caucasian heritage, I bring a unique perspective that I plan to use in my university studies and later in my professional life to further inclusive recruitment and practices.

My performance in high school, marked by a high GPA, is a testimony to my unwavering commitment to academic excellence. This commitment, coupled with my interest in Computer Science and Finance, leads me to believe that I could make the most of the opportunities offered at the University of Mississippi or any of the other universities I've been accepted into.

Given my track record, aspirations, and unique background, I believe I am a strong candidate for the Varsity Tutors College Scholarship. I am convinced that the financial assistance your scholarship offers will go a long way in facilitating my access to quality education, which I am committed to using for the betterment of my community and society at large. I am keen to apply the knowledge gained in bridging technology and finance, and in doing so, I plan to bring diverse perspectives to these fields.
