Where I See Myself in 10 Years by Becca - December 2015 Scholarship Essay
Where do I see myself in ten years? That is a question that I want to be able to answer confidently, but I can’t. Starting off my freshman year at Indiana University as undecided is a little bit scary. When you’re in college, everybody expects you to know exactly what you’re majoring in and exactly what you want to do with your life. Well for me, my answer is simple: I have no idea! I’m eighteen years old, how am I supposed to know exactly what I want to do for the rest of my life? That’s where my education comes in.
All throughout high school, I had literally no idea what I wanted to do. I mean sure, I had some general ideas here and there, but overall I was completely lost. I still feel the same now that I’m in college, but the difference about high school and college is that IU offers a huge variety of classes that I can take and so many resources to help me determine what I want to do in my life. This semester, I took pretty random classes to fulfill the general education requirements. I took a gender class, a sociology class, I even took a class about the mafia. I don’t know if it’s something about being in college or what, but ever since I’ve been here I’ve found myself thinking a lot deeper about issues that I would have never addressed as a high school student. As a high school student I never knew the difference between sex and gender and I never thought about the different types of oppression. These classes are helping me open up my mind and look at the world with a much broader perspective. I enjoy these classes so much that I’m taking another gender class and another sociology class next semester.
College isn’t just for learning textbook material, it’s for inspiring students like me who have no idea what they want to do in life and offering us the resources that we need to figure that out. I know that IU offers a class that is designed to help students determine what they might want to do in life, and there is a career development center right here on campus. When I do figure out what I want to do, I know that I will be offered endless resources to help me achieve in that field of study.
So when it comes to asking where I see myself in ten years, I don’t have a solid answer to that. However, I do know that I will be graduated from Indiana University and I will have a career and a family and it will all be thanks to the education that I received here at IU.
