Studying abroad; The opportunity of a lifetime by Baylee - November 2017 Scholarship Essay
Being able to study abroad would positively impact my college education by allowing me to get a real life language experience, thus expanding my knowledge and helping me explore other cultures which will help make me more worldly and open minded to the way the world works, expanding my horizon as an individual. Getting involved in the community will give me real world experience that can help boost my career prospects. Lastly, I would get to experience different styles of education. By enrolling in study abroad programs I would get to see a different side of my major that I may not have been exposed to at home.
Although my three years of Spanish in high school have taught me a lot, learning through a book is vastly different than real-world experience. I don't actually get to experience that language I’ve been trying so hard to learn until I’m submerged in it. That's exactly what studying abroad will do. It will help me get submerged in the language because it will be all around me. In addition, living with your host will likely offer language courses to provide me with more formal education. This is only one of the many ways studying abroad would positively impact my education.
Studying abroad would give me a chance to get involved in the community. Getting involved in community activities will help give me a valuable real-world experience that can boost my career prospects, not only for the workplace but for any other activity I could be applying for. This will also show my willingness and drive to help the community, thus positively impacting my college education by opening me to more activities to do in the community at home.
Ways of teaching are different everywhere you go. This is one of the many reason studying abroad is a great idea and would impact my education by showing me different styles of teaching that I would get to experience through studying abroad. This would give me an opportunity to be instructed by someone who is fluent in the language and culture, giving me a unique perspective on how different my major is from at home versus in the country i’m studying in.
