Monthly Resolutions by Ashley - January 2016 Scholarship Essay
Every New Year I make New Year Resolutions, but to be honest I never really stuck to them. I would have the same generic goals every year: eat healthier, workout, and be more optimistic. Once I get off track from achieving my goals, I would quit because I feel like I failed. So this New Year I decided to try something new and pick out different New Year Resolutions, because clearly the old resolutions were not working for me. This New Year, my resolution was to make a goal for myself each month. I feel that this is more realistic for me, and I am not setting myself up to fail.
For January, my first resolution is to find a job that will help me with my career goals. I am going to school to become a nurse and hope to pursue a career as a neonatal nurse. I applied for Certified Nursing Assistant jobs in hospitals such as NICU and Women and Infants Unit. This will help me become a better student, because I will be able to get hands on experience and feel comfortable in the hospital setting. I will also become familiar with the vocabulary used by the nurses and doctors.
In February, my New Year’s resolution is to be punctual. I want to be on time for meetings, classes, and work. I struggle with being on time and feel that it is something I need to work on, which is why it is one of my first resolutions. This will not only benefit me to become a better student, but also become a well-rounded person. By being on time, I will not miss any classes, and I will not miss valuable information. Being punctual will also help me in my job. If I am punctual my coworkers can rely on me and I will not get in trouble.
For the month of March, my third resolution is to volunteer at Children’s Hospital. I love socializing and helping people. By volunteering I will be able to use my skills and knowledge to help kids. I will also be able to put my extra time to good use instead of watching T.V. or looking at Facebook. Volunteering will help me become a better student because it will help me realize what the community needs. It will also help me find a focal point in what areas I would like to study in the future.
At the end of the year, I hope to accomplish twelve resolutions. So far I chose three goals to achieve. If I do not achieve my goals in the month it was assigned, I will carry it over to the next month. I will also choose my next three goals at the end of March. Three goals that I have in mind are to apply to scholarships, pack balanced lunches instead of going out to eat and eating unhealthy, and to join, but more importantly, become involved in a student organization at Alverno to network professionally and to meet other students. By choosing three goals at a time, I will feel less stressed and overwhelmed about accomplishing them. By choosing a monthly goal, I feel that it is more realistic for me to achieve, and I will be able to use this method for every New Year’s resolution.
