Adventure Starts at Night by Ashley - January 2019 Scholarship Essay
When most people are asked if they are a morning person or a night owl, you’ll usually get the response ‘night owl’, with the exception of the few that somehow love to wake up before the sun has even began to rise over the mountains and into the face of someone who wants nothing more than to sleep in.
As much as I wish I could tell you that I am rare, that I am a morning person, I cannot, because I am an adventurer who braves the dark, defies all the odds of the clock that tells me it’s way past the time I should have been asleep. There’s just something that makes you feel alive as the house seems to dare you to make a sound as you creep around your bedroom searching for the phone you dropped on the carpet.
Something that makes you feel a bit of thrill as you trip over the chair you’d forgotten you’d moved, and you hear the thundering of your parents’ footsteps as you leap into bed and bury yourself under the covers like you’d never left the bed at all.
There is something magical about the shapes on the wall, how they morph and shift without a thought, almost as if they long to tell you a story that’s been long forgotten. Then when the fun, the thrill, the magic has taken its course, it leaves you spiraling into a different world, taking your hand and telling you secrets that can only be spoken at night.
