That Little Girl rought light to the Holy Grail of Subjects by Ashley - October 2016 Scholarship Essay

I worked at the Kumon Math and Reading Center where I gained the opportunity to tutor students in math and reading also to work one-on-one with early learners. I remember when she first walked in at my job. She has short hair and enormous brown eyes. As soon as she saw my face we connected automatically and she asked my supervisor if I could be her teacher. She was only five years old and had not started kindergarten yet. I knew it would be difficult to teach a student how to read that mainly spoke Indian at home, but I took the challenge.
Everyday she came in she would wait for me by the door until I noticed her presence. We would sit at the table and complete her worksheets. At first, I would say a word or phrase and she would have to repeat my words with the right pronunciation. That was the difficult part, teaching a little girl how to pronounce words correctly with her accent. Note that I am not a certified teacher or a speech therapist, but I had diligence for her and me to complete her work successfully. I would repeat myself constantly and would praise her for all her hard work.
On a random Monday, she came in and was confident that she would finish her work successfully. We started to work and with me helping her closely she had begun to sound out three-letter words. She looked at me and had the greatest grin on her face and said, “I did it”. She came up to me and gave me the biggest hug; I felt her accomplishment. As soon as she finished I praised her for all the hard work she had put in for months and how amazing she was to carry out her goals. It was a special moment for both of us. I talked to her parents about her dedication to her work and they had told me that I was her motivation. Since I was always there to praise her potential and keep her focus it led to her success.
Today, Megha is at the top of her 1st-grade class. She has motivated me to continue my education and go to college for Childhood Education. She allowed me to realize that I have a gift working with children and I want to teach at an elementary school level. It is an interest I love and can see myself doing for the rest of my life. It is amazing how two people can depend on each other and create a real life moment that allows them to further their individual goals. I am grateful that little girl entered my life. She has allowed me to experience life more openly and taught me that some dreams are worth fighting for to come true. I am now a full-time student at Le Moyne College. When I graduate I will have a bachelor's degree in psychology and will have my certification to teach grades 1-6 and special education.
After college, I will work my way to get my masters degree. I hope to work as a teacher head of a classroom in a New York State urban school district filled with diversity and opportunity. Everyone has progressed to where they are in life because they had a teacher, someone who taught them a path they should go. While I teach my goal is to make an impact on the students’ lives. I wish to relate to these students while being available by mentoring and nurturing their talents. I want that incredible joy in seeing the difference I make, as students gain new ideas and become more interested in subjects while learning about themselves. I strive to care for each student individually and advocate for children when they do not have the power to do so. To teach at the elementary school level isn’t simply one subject; rather it’s a variety of them. I will teach all the ranges of academics from math, reading, social studies, science etc. Although I am teaching academics, I will also be teaching so much more. I will teach students social skills and manners. I want my students to be great citizens in the world and a friend to lean on. Elementary School is a major component of children’s development, which is why it is so important. In order for me to carry out my goals, I will need the best education and learn broad subjects for my students to have a full comprehension.
