Conceiving and Receiving by Areyana - September 2018 Scholarship Essay
Ever since I was a little girl, i’ve known what i’ve loved to do. Create. I used to sit in my room and write short stories, or make meals out of old pizza crusts and leaves. When I first learned the alphabet, I would sit on the floor with a dry erase board and put different letters together without knowing whether they were words or not. My brain, inner being, and soul are all wrapped around this idea of creation. At an early age, I knew where my passion existed. In that realm of ideas not yet brought into existence, of unknown infinites and “what could be’s”.
That is why it is so easy for me to see the future now. To see 42 year old me, 25 years from now, only a mirror image of 4 year old me. I can see myself in planes, traversing the endless earth, discovering and uncovering something new everywhere I go. I see myself creating stories, words, poetry, music in the form of words, enlightening the world. Changing the world.
I see myself meeting new people. Celebrating our existence together and understanding their culture. I see myself speaking to the world, informing the world, showing the world, performing for the world, changing the world.
The most important thing is, I don’t only see myself changing the world. I see the world changing me. Challenging my beliefs and ideas. Forcing me to expand my horizon beyond what I ever knew. Showing me what I have that other people don’t, how different other people’s lives are from mines, how we all somehow exist on this ball that we call our planet. How we can be so similar, yet so different.
I see that with every step I take, one question is answered and 10 more are made. I see the letters that I played with as a little girl forming into intense, meaningful proclamations about love and the meaning of life.
The world is a large place, and I want to experience all of it. I want to create memories, stories, and experiences. I want to create lifelong relationships and learn life lessons as I move and grow. I want to learn what it means to be human. What it means to coexist. What it means to love and live and how to pass on a legacy. This is what I see myself doing in 25 years.
