The unexpected path to my dream destination by Anna - February 2019 Scholarship Essay

During my sophomore year of high school, I took Health Science I Honors. The class was very interesting, especially when we learned about the different systems of the human body. One day in class my teacher showed us a video of a body that was donated to science. Most people in my class covered their eyes in horror as the doctor hosting the video cut the dead man’s skin off revealing the organs below. However, instead of being disgusted, I was intrigued. Seeing all of the different organs in the man's body was riveting In one part of the video, the host tugged on a tendon in the arm and it was able to open and close the man’s hand. I was fascinated by this video and the complexity of the human body. It was this day in class that I realized that I wanted to major in biological sciences. This major will allow me to learn more about the human body. A biological science degree sets me on the right path to have a career in the medical field. I want a major and career that I can be excited about and constantly grow in knowledge. Pursuing a major in biological science will open the door to unlimited career opportunities.
In addition to majoring biology, I would like to double major or minor in mathematics. While taking Calculus AB my junior year, I realized my love and aptitude for math. Math problems come together like a puzzle in my head, and I find myself getting excited for the answer. I am currently the President of Mu Alpha Theta, and enjoy sharing the appreciation for the subject with my peers. A major or minor in mathematics will further prepare me for a career in the medical field because math skills are necessary for medical research and having an overall better understanding of the field.
A major in biology and mathematics will prepare me for a career in the medical field. Although, I do not currently know exactly which path I will take, I know that a career in the medicine is what I aspire to. Both medical research and practicing medicine are very interesting and something I hope to learn more about while in college. I am very active in community service and want to continue serving others throughout my life. A career in medicine will provide me with a larger platform to do so. While in college, I hope to further develop my skills and abilities, so that I can pursue the career path that will be of most benefit to myself and others.
