Time Management by Ankita - January 2016 Scholarship Essay

Any student can agree that time management is a big part of being in school; it requires an immense amount of responsibility along with maturity. As New Year’s was quickly approaching I thought about what I could commit to during the year of 2016 that could change me for the better seeing as I am about to graduate and start college soon. I thought what could be better than to prioritize my time better?
Being a senior in high school and being a student athlete it was extremely difficult to manage my time wisely. In the previous year during soccer season I always found myself struggling to finish homework before the next school day every night due to having games and getting home late. It started to affect the way I performed in class, attention wise, but I never let it affect my grades. Most nights I would stay up past 1 o’clock in the morning in order to finish homework or cram studying in before a big test in the morning. Although this method didn’t hurt my grades, it did hurt my body. Due to the lack of sleep I was getting I was unable to perform at my best ability not only in the classroom but also on the soccer field. I found myself becoming sluggish and very irritable each day from the lack of time I had to do so many things.
I started to come to my senses that I couldn’t do this for 5 more months. So I started to think of ways to become more efficient throughout the day with the work load that I had. I would do homework that I had during lunch, or go to the library to read for medical or English when teaching was done in class. I began doing my math work on the bus on the way to away games and during the JV games sitting in the bleachers. I started to spend any free time I had trying to finish as much work as possible before getting home.
In return of being more mature and more proactive with my work I started to get more than 4-5 hours of sleep, which enhanced my performance in school and on the field. Although the year just started, this small change has already influenced me greatly and if I stick to my resolution of being more responsible with the time I have, I will definitely finish the school year strong, and will also be ready to take on college aggressively.
