A Person That Has Had a Positive Impact on my Education by Anisha- March 2023 Scholarship Essay by Anisha - March 2023 Scholarship Essay

For as long as I can remember, my father has always been my greatest teacher and educational inspiration. From helping me figure out tough math problems to taking me to cultural history museums- he always wants to help me learn. He has this phrase that he commonly says- “Get used to becoming a lifelong learner”. Given how fast the world is changing, people are constantly having to learn and study new information to better their lives, career, and most importantly, their mind. He takes notice of this and applies it to his own life, and taught me how to apply it to mine. Through him, I have gotten into the mindset to push through what I don’t understand and to love learning.
My father taught me to stick with learning a subject even if I wasn’t the best at it. Growing up, I struggled with math. I’d often feel like giving up and felt hopeless when I couldn’t solve a problem. My dad, taking note of this, always came up with fun math games we could play to help me understand the problems. My favorite game was “Fun with Fractions”, where we would color pieces of paper, cut them up, and throw them in the air shouting “Fun with Fractions!!”. Then, we would piece the pieces of paper back together in various forms to see how many different combinations we could come up with. What was a fun game to play with my dad, also helped me learn math concepts I was struggling with. Most importantly- I learned to have fun while also educating myself.
My father has also been an amazing educational role model by teaching me a healthy learning mindset. His true love for learning is recognizable to anyone who crosses his path. He takes night classes for fun at our local university on various topics, most recently, a class on the American West. He loves to explore subjects outside his field of study for no other purpose than curiosity. Most recently, he scheduled a tour at a local water purification facility. When I inquired as to why he was going, he said that he wanted to learn how the water was purified because it seemed interesting. What seemed like a simple conversation to him meant a lot more to me. I truly realized how much he has impacted me and my mindset for learning- because he taught me that education is more than just learning facts and subjects. Education is also about how you learn and your passion for learning. I learned from my dad that having a “lifelong learner” mindset will positively impact and change my future for the better.
