Reaching Destinations through Goals by Andrew - August 2022 Scholarship Essay

A syringe. One of if not the most feared objects; arguably even more frightening than spiders! Children hate them the most as they are forced every few months to be impaled in every place and from every angle by the long, pointy objects. I can remember my parents assured me that "it'll only hurt for a minute" or "it's just a pinch" when in reality they too, fear the pain. The fear of the needle will never secede, even throughout adulthood…that is until it does. When mothers are in the delivery room, sweating profusely from the boiling temperatures, breathing heavily from the nauseating twisting and turning of the human growing inside of them, dehydrating from fluids, but also from any energy they have left, all they want is an escape. All they want is a relief. All they want is the anesthesiologist to impale her with the long, pointy object that will inject a life-altering, chill-giving relief. I know this feeling. I watched my mom beg for it like she was a hungry homeless woman begging for scraps. She sobbed and screamed in agony. She screamed for the thing that once gave her the most fright.
This kind of relief is what I hope to one day be able to administer to thousands. To disperse the escape that is craved not only by mothers at birth but by those in any sort of need of an escape from pain. And although I am only a Senior in High School, I know that my journey will never come close to finishing without the letters ‘Dr.’ in the front of my name and the letters, ‘MD’ behind it. This title will not be simply because of the schooling I plan to go through either; it will be a responsibility for me to devote my life to serving those in my community to better health.
My goal for this upcoming school year is to further increase my 4.1176 GPA through Dual Enrollment classes. My goal is to begin gaining numerous college credits. My goal is to shave off as many years of schooling as I can to reach my destination even quicker. I plan on taking my four classes: Math 170, English 102, History 101, and Psychology 101 head-on with no mercy. I will prove to my community that I will reach my goals and far exceed the regular standards. I will take on these classes second by second, hour by hour, day by day, week by week until eventually, I will look up, throw on my white coat, and help those like my mother. Those who feel so much pain, that they are no longer afraid of a syringe.
