Worry's Defeat by Ana Gabriela - February 2016 Scholarship Essay

"Worry is a cycle of inefficient thoughts whirling around a center of fear."
-Corrie Ten Boom

The next chapter of my life is a vast empty space. I do not know what could happen next. Oftentimes, this uncertainty causes worry to rear its ugly head and keeps me from focusing on what really matters.
Corrie Ten Boom faced many difficult situations when the future was uncertain and she had no control over the things that were happening to her and the people she loved. She put her life on the line to save many others from the tyranny of the Nazis, then suffered for her decision at a Nazi concentration camp. She heard of her father's death while in the first concentration camp and then lost her sister later on as well. What would it be like to sit across from her and learn about the reason that she did not let the root of worry, fear, take hold of her heart. There is wisdom in her life that she has shared through the books that she has written, but hearing it straight from her lips would allow me to see the emotion behind the words and would add a facet to her story that could not be obtained just from reading the words on a page.
If I could have dinner with Corrie Ten Boom, I would learn so much from her life about how to combat anxiety and fear that would strengthen and prepare me for my future.
